How we built our whole brand.

The name, the mark, the colour, the type, and the months of trying and failing in between. The full story behind the carousel, receipts attached.

We’re a team who spent years in this industry, and we came together to make something new. Almost at once we slipped back into old habits: workflows, deliverables, client hubs, who to target, how to make money. We forgot what we were here to do, so we stripped it all back. What came back was one line: we make cool shit. Everything below follows from that.

The name

We went through a lot of names. Elemental Studios, what we used to be. Root, route, organic, signal, a whole pile of tech-and-nature words pinned to the board. We didn’t want to pick a side between the two worlds, because the studio is both: modern tools, organic output.

“New” next to “root” said it best: a new path and new growth at the same time. Not a compromise between tech and nature. Both at once, fused.

The logo journey

The mark did not arrive in a flash of genius. It arrived at the end of a queue of marks that didn’t make it. Click through the pile, this is the actual sequence.

94logo generations. 13 shortlisted. 6 survived a wall vote. 1 kept.

The keeper works because it pulls double duty. One shape, two reads, nothing spelled out. The organic bit, made with the modern tools.

The colour

First rule: one colour that pops and actually feels like us. Early on, everything grew around a sunflower. There was a whole logo built on one, dots and all. We let the flower go, but its yellow stuck, and it’s been ours ever since.

Yellow, black and paper is a solid baseline, but a bit bumblebee on its own. We’re a colourful bunch, so the palette got a set of pops to reach for. This is the whole set. Click one and the hex is yours.

The type

Three faces, no agonising. The wordmark leads: modern and clean enough for the tech world we live in, rounded and soft enough to feel organic. Young Serif takes the loud moments. Gabarito does everything else.

The honest part

Going from a scrapbook of half-ideas and dead ends to a finished brand was quick, with AI and the skill to drive it. But getting there took months of trying and failing. For us, fast was never the same as good.

The tools kept up with us. Not the other way round.

The machines cleared the barriers: the rendering, the variations, the grunt work of seeing an idea before committing to it. The thinking, the taste, the kill decisions, those stayed ours. Don’t let AI kill your creative process. Get good first, then let it keep up.

The working method, if you want it

Two of the pieces that made this run repeatable. The first is the fix for generators mangling logos: never describe a logo in words, attach the vector renders and instruct the model to reproduce them faithfully.

logo-in-image.mdClaude skillOur repeatable recipe for holding a real logo across generated scenes. Vector refs, negative block, saved prompts.

The second is the prompt behind the launch carousel this post belongs to. Every slide sits on a photographed scene where the objects tell that slide’s part of the story. This is the cover’s substrate, word for word.

The carousel cover prompt

directly overhead top-down flat lay photograph of a worn forest green self-healing cutting mat with a faint measurement grid, scratches and knife wear, real desk objects arranged only around the edges of the frame leaving the entire middle of the mat completely empty: a cream mechanical keyboard angled and partially cropped in the top left corner, white tangled wired earbuds along the left edge, a classic white computer mouse at the lower left, a yellow highlighter marker and a small metal craft knife along the right edge, a vintage instant camera partially cropped in the bottom right corner, everything casting soft real shadows, bright even daylight, shot on a phone from directly above, clean neutral grade, matte surfaces, natural light, no text anywhere

Where it goes

A brand is a foundation and a guiding light, not a trophy. We don’t want to get stuck admiring our own logo. It’s a place to start, and now we get to go make the actual things. So let’s go make cool shit.
